首都のスラムにて。

テジガオンスラム

Tejgaon slum in Dhaka

線路沿いにずらっと並ぶスラムのバラック。

ずらーーーーーーっと、何キロも。

Small shack houses are beside train rail for few kilometers.

頻繁に通る電車は、彼らの家のぎりぎりを行く。

そのたびに、子どもたちは線路のこっちに来たりあっちに行ったり。

「今度はこっちこっち！電車あっちからくるよ！」何度もそう言われました。

A train often come through close to their houses.

Children jump one rail to another rail.

"Hey train is coming! Come come, this rail!" Kids said to me with laugh. 

赤ちゃんを抱いたお父さんに「あなたは、ここに何年住んでいるのですか？」と尋ねると、

「３０年かな。ぼくもここで生まれたから。」と驚く答えが。

I asked one father who holding his baby "How long have you been staying here?"

He said "mmm... 30 years. I was also born here!" 

前日に訪れたのは首都からバスで３時間半の村。

『貧しい』という点では同じかもしれない。

先進国から来た人も貧しいと言うだろうし、

そこの住人たちも自分たちは貧しい、と言う。

The previous day, I stayed one village 3.5 hours far from this capital city.

Maybe the word "poverty" is same.

People who are from developed countries may say poor.

And people who are staying here also said "We are poor."

でも確実に異なる点がある。

However there are big difference.

田んぼが遠くまで広がり、

みんな池で水浴びをし、

子どもが裸足で走り回り、

ヤギとあぜみちを歩き、

牛から子どもたちが勝手に牛乳を飲み、

おなかが空いたら木に登ってマンゴーをとってかじり、

牛の糞を乾かしまた肥料にする

・・・そんな農村。

In the village,

there are huge rice field,

people taking bath in a pond together,

children are running without shoes, 

walking narrow read between rice field and rice field.

kids can drink milk from cow around there,

climb up tree and get fresh mango,

they use cattle manure as compost....

一方で、

街からのあらゆるゴミが流れ込み、

その異臭が鼻をつき、

電車の騒音が夜中もやまず、

物乞いがたくさんいて、

警察が一日に何度もやってきて、

覚せい剤やシンナーが堂々と売られ、

子どもまでそれを吸っていたりする

・・・そんな都市のスラム。

On the other hand, at the slum in town,

all kinds of garbage came from all the town,

and the smell is bad,

there is traffic noise of train all the daytime and at night,

there are many many beggars,

police come here many times per day,

drug and paint thinner are sold on the road,

even children are using those drug...

「スラムの住人たちのほとんどが近代化の産物である。

もともと現金収入が少なくとも資源という点では別に貧しくはなかった人々が、

都会に流れてくると自分の肉体を除いた一切の資源を失ってしまう」

という以前読んだフレーズが頭に浮かんできた。

"Most of the inhabitants of slum is a product of modernization.

Once people who were not poor in terms of resources even if cash income is not so much 

flowed in the city, 

they may lose the all resources except their body."

I read this phrase few months ago.

農村でも都市でも、子どもたちは元気いっぱい。

でも私に「マニーマニー」と手を出してくる子は農村にはいなかった。

Children are all the time full of energy both in the village and slum.

But there are no child who beg me money in the village.

この『近代化の産物』の中で生まれ育つ子どもたち。

近代化のしわ寄せは世界中でこういうところに集まっているのだろう。

We, many people, enjoy modernization.

but we need to think about those "product of modernization" all over the world.
